چکیده

In this paper, I study the behavior of an investor with unit risk aversion who maximizes a utility function defined over the mean and the variance of a portfolio’s return. Conditioning information is accessible without cost and an unconditionally riskless asset is available in the market. The proposed approach makes it possible to compare the performance of a benchmark tangency portfolio (formed from the set of unrestricted estimates of portfolio weights) to the performance of a restricted tangency portfolio which uses single-index and multi-index asset pricing models to constrain the first moments of asset returns. The main findings of the paper are summarized as follows: i) The estimates of the constant and timevarying tangency portfolio weights are extremely volatile and imprecise. Using an asset pricing model to constrain mean asset returns eliminates extreme short positions in the underlying securities and improves the precision of the estimates of the weights. ii) Partially restricting mean asset returns according to single-index and multi-index asset pricing models improves the out-of-sample performance of the tangency portfolio. iii) Active investment strategies (i.e., strategies that incorporate the role played by conditioning information in investment decisions) strongly dominate passive investment strategies in-sample but do not provide any convincing pattern of improved out-of-sample performance. JEL classification: G11, G12, G15

asset pricing anomalies at the firm level

Anomaly is deviation from common rules and in finance it can be defined as a pattern in the average of stock return that is not consistent with the prevailing asset pricing models literature. For anomaly investigation two common methods are used: portfolio approach and individual firm approach. This paper wants to shed light on anomalies of capital asset pricing model at the individual firm lev...

Higher moments portfolio Optimization with unequal weights based on Generalized Capital Asset pricing model with independent and identically asymmetric Power Distribution

The main criterion in investment decisions is to maximize the investors utility. Traditional capital asset pricing models cannot be used when asset returns do not follow a normal distribution. For this reason, we use capital asset pricing model with independent and identically asymmetric power distributed (CAPM-IIAPD) and capital asset pricing model with asymmetric independent and identically a...

Tangency portfolio weights for singular covariance matrix in small and large dimensions: estimation and test theory

In this paper we derive the finite-sample distribution of the estimated weights of the tangency portfolio when both the population and the sample covariance matrices are singular. These results are used in the derivation of a statistical test on the weights of the tangency portfolio where the distribution of the test statistic is obtained under both the null and the alternative hypotheses. Dynamic Pricing with Periodic Review and a Finite set of Prices with Cancellation

In this paper, three dynamic pricing models are developed and analyzed. We assume a limited number of a particular asset is offered for sale over a period of time. This asset is perishable and can be an inventory or a manufacturing capacity. During each period, the seller sets a price for this asset. This price is selected from a predetermined discrete set. The maximum amount which a customer i...
